Dry needling and acupuncture are alternative forms of medicine and are most commonly used for pain relief. These methods of treatment stimulate the body’s acupuncture points with sterilised, thin needles. JQ Physiotherapy & Sports Rehabilitation offer these treatments in conjunction with your physiotherapy program to boost pain relief and recovery.
Dry needling, also known as trigger point needling or western acupuncture depending on the specific technique used, involves the use of acupuncture type needles being introduced into trigger points in muscles to stimulate a ‘twitch’ response resulting in ‘release or relaxation’ of the trigger point… a trigger point being a hyperirritable, taut band of muscle.
The basis of the technique is to restore normal muscle function and is to be used in conjunction with physiotherapy and exercise treatment.
Similar to dry needling, in acupuncture, very fine needles are inserted at specific trigger points on the body to provide pain relief. The needles stimulate your brain to produce more of your body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, such as endorphins and serotonin, enabling your body to self-repair more effectively.
Dry needling and acupuncture are highly effective at reducing pain to restore proper function and mobility. These are rarely standalone procedures. These techniques are typically used in conjunction with other physiotherapy methods to complement the treatment and make it more effective.
